Paphos
is about 45 minutes journey from Polis. There's a bus every hour,
service taxi's for about £5 or you can go in your hire car
(about £15 per day) The roads are all good and remember, they
drive on the right hand side like the UK. Although Paphos is very
much more developed than Polis and has many of the trappings of
city life, both good and bad, this is where you can have a grand
day out looking at some ancient sites and wonders.
Just
follow the signs to The Tomb of the Kings is a large site
which is mainly in the open (so remember to either go early / later
on or take a sun hat) The excavations have revealed many carved
out underground tombs, many of which have been renovated and can
be accessed. This is great fun for children who are free to explore
deep into the tombs with all their passages and caverns (go when
it's cooler if you can) There is free parking outside the site.
Further
along the coast in the same site you will find the Palaces and
Mosaics. There is a carpark outside so you can drive down from
the tombs - othwerwise it's a 15 walk. These are. again. out in
the open so the stay cool rule applies although some of the very
well preserved mosaics are now covered by buildings to protect them.
You can usually tag onto a tour guide to get all the highlights
which include, among others, the Palace of Dyonisos, amazing mosaics,
and an amphitheatre. This site is huge and could keep you busy for
hours if you're into that sort of thing
